WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.), the actor who is considering a presidential bid, is a strong second to former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in a new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg Poll.

Giuliani was supported by 27 percent of those who planned to vote in the 2008 Republican primaries. Thompson was favored by 21 percent. Sen. John McCain of Arizona got 12 percent, with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 10 percent.

Among the Democrats, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton had 33 percent, followed by Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois with 22 percent. Running third, with 15 percent, was former Vice President Al Gore, who has been urged to run but says he doesn't plan to do so. Fourth was former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, at 8 percent.
