A shareholder proposal to end Kraft Foods’ support of the 2006 Gay Games VII was overwhelmingly rejected by the food company and its investors at its annual stockholders meeting, according to Advertising Age.
At the meeting, 99 percent of Kraft’s investors rejected the move by fellow stockholder Marcella Meyer to “disassociate” from the sports event because of her anti-gay stance.
Meyer, a Chicago doctor, attempted to cancel the sponsorship because of her belief in a link between being gay and contracting sexually transmitted diseases, particularly HIV. She believed that Kraft would be legally liable if a Gay Games participant developed a fatal illness after the event.
Kraft has donated $25,000 to the Games.
